Clean Ingredient Pizza Dough Recipe

This homemade pizza dough is made with clean and simple ingredients opting to replace traditional cane sugar with coconut sugar (though not totally necessary) and adding seasoning to the dough for a more flavorful crust. You can have the peace of mind of knowing exactly what is going into your pizza dough without compromising on taste by putting the ingredients together yourself! If you’re like me and filled with dread when looking at ingredient labels on anything and everything only to find harsh, potentially cancerous, and harmful additives…then rest assured because this pizza dough recipe is anything BUT that.

For this pizza I used 4 (freshly grated) cheeses: mozzarella, gruyere, cheddar and gouda with pepperoni toppings

Note – to make this pizza dough I use my KitchenAid Artesian Stand Mixer, but feel free to mix all the ingredients together using a wooden or silicon spoon.

Shaping Pizza Dough

The added benefit of making pizza dough at home is you can customize the shape into whatever you want! During the fall my husband and I shaped our pizza dough into a pumpkin, which definitely added to the fun and took no time at all. After the dough is finished resting, simply shape the dough using your fingers into the desired shape prior to adding any toppings. I highly recommend placing the dough on a pizza pan prior to shaping so you won’t have to deal with moving the dough after you’ve shaped it. Get creative with it!

Ingredients

Instructions

Making the Dough

  1. Combine dry ingredients

Combine 1 cup of all purpose flour, 1 packet of active dry yeast, coconut sugar, salt, garlic powder, dried oregano and basil in a bowl or a stand mixer.

  2. Add wet ingredients

Add the olive oil and the warm water into the bowl with the dry ingredients and set your stand mixer on a low setting using the dough hook, stirring for 1 minute.

Make sure the water is warm (but not hot), avoiding room temp water as this will hinder the yeast from activating. The optimal temperature is between 105-115 F
  3. Gradually add in 1 additional cup of all purpose flour to the bowl and allow the the stand mixer to mix the dough for about 5 minutes on low (between setting 2-3), scraping the sides of the bowl as necessary. The dough should begin to form a cohesive sticky texture.

With dry hands with a small amount of flour, touch the dough. The dough should feel sticky to the touch but not leave reside on your fingers.

If the dough is too sticky, add in 2 tbsps of additional all purpose flour and allow the dough to mix for another minute. Repeat until the dough reaches the appropriate texture making sure not to over-flour the dough.
  4. Prep

Preheat the oven to 425 F

In a separate bowl, drizzle a coating of olive oil making sure the sides of the bowl are fully coated.

Once the dough has formed a cohesive and slightly sticky ball, lightly dust your hands with all purpose flour and form the dough into a ball.

Place the dough ball into the bowl with olive oil. Once the dough is in the bowl, flip the ball onto its other side to coat the whole dough ball in olive oil.

  5. Rest

Place a towel over the bowl  and place the bowl near the oven that is preheating. This will allow the dough to be in a warm environment which will aid in activating the yeast.

Allow the dough to rest for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.

  1. Shaping the dough

On a flat surface, roll out the dough using a rolling pin. Fold the edges of the pizza dough inward to create a crust. Lightly brush the dough surface with olive oil and poke holes throughout the surface of the dough using a fork.

After adding toppings, pizza is ready to go into the oven for 15-20 minutes

Note

Common mistakes to avoid:

  1. Adding too much flour or putting lukewarm/cold water when making the dough. This can cause the dough to turn out dry or not rise at all.
  2. Careful not to over-sauce or over-cheese the pizza. Too much cheese and too much sauce over-moisturizes the pizza and can cause a greasy mess! Especially with cheeses like mozzarella which naturally contain a lot of moisture.
